In 2010, I spent a lot of time with a good friend, Craig Dunham. Craig had ALS. It's an awful disease and robs you slowly of all muscle movement, so Craig lost his ability to move or speak. Despite all this, he still found ways to communicate, to smile, and to live in the best way he could until he was unable to swallow. His faith was strong and he didn't fear death.
His example of faith and perseverance has inspired me to live a full life myself. I lead an annual Walk to Defeat ALS dressed as the fictional super-hero: Super Carpe Diem Woman and the motto I'm known for is "Carpe Diem" or Seize the Day. I especially like that CD are the same initials as Craig Dunham.
My Facebook page has a picture of me as Super Carpe Diem Woman and for my 60th birthday, February 26, 2020, my kids gifted me with a special Carpe Diem Day in the National Archives.

Now, during the COVID-19 outbreak, it's more of a challenge to feel like we can "Seize the Day" in the typical ways. We can't travel or visit friends and family in person. But we can continue to connect and have wonderful technologies to allow us still to see one another and have virtual celebrations. I'm moved at the creativity and wonderful ways that we are bonding throughout the world and helping one another get through this crisis.
Carpe Diem Day - What a thoughtful gift from your children for your birthday this year! I did not have the privilege to meet Craig Dunham, but am familiar with your efforts for defeating ALS. I think you will cherish Carpe Diem Day and something all your friends and loved ones associate with you!
